What happens when our most intimate moments are filtered through artificial means? How can we make the inborn, deep human need for bonding and communication compatible with the synthetic world we have established around us? Through the images generated by Artificial Intelligence, Arielko explores how our most basic expressions of love and consolation continue to exist, even when processed through materials that seem to be in direct opposition to intimacy – glass-like surfaces, plastic shapes, and artificial elements.
The project began with a chance discovery of a particular style in Midjourney that spoke to both delicacy and artificiality, arousing a broad range of associations in the artist: from his grandmother’s glass miniatures through disposable plastic toys, from the neon landscapes of Tokyo to the cold gleam of cosmetic surgery.
To realize his vision, Arielko used AI as a creative research instrument through Midjourney using the “non-prompting” approach. He kept strictly to the most minimal prompts to allow for unexpected outcomes. A “prompt” is a text or instruction input into an AI program to direct it in creating the image. Instead of providing the machine with the most specific details, Arielko decided to use guidelines that were as open as possible to enable the machine to stimulate new associations and examine the borders between control and waiving control. Through this process, the issue arises as to how something so synthetic can arouse a familiar feeling of intimacy. What is it that remains human even when created by artificial means?
Arielko’s artworks invite viewers to wonder what remains fundamentally human even when expressed through means that are clearly non-human. Perhaps it is precisely within this tension between the artificial and the intimate that we will be able to find new ways to understand the relationship system that is developing between us humans and a world becoming increasingly controlled by digital technology
